about

What makes this the right time for a compilation release from contemporary jazz master Brian Tarquin? Actually, anytime is right for getting a group of timeless tracks such as these together, but the stars seem to have aligned just so to make these 14 classics converge now.

A lifelong student of sound and widely acknowledged guitar guru, Tarquin is giving back to his fans by putting their favorites together in one convenient album. Representing a parade of top-charting acid jazz hits released from 1996-2008, The Brian Tarquin Collection delivers song after song of satisfaction – perfectly swaying beats, smooth stylings, soulful jams and constant inspiration.

For the multi-Emmy Award winning composer, the compilation is a chance to show exactly what defines him in the world of smooth jazz. “I always took the pop tip, more than coming from the bebop angle,” Tarquin explains. “You can pick up on my rock influences as well, and it comes together in a way that’s very accessible. Going through all the hits that have come out over the years, it’s been amazing to see all these songs that have meant so much to my audience and me in one place.”

The record starts with 12 hits from critically-praised albums that came out on Jazz Inspiration/MCA and Instinct records, kicking off with the groove-inducing, sax-soaked “One Arabian Knight” from his 1997 release Last Kiss Goodbye. Next up is his smooth-moving cover of “Darlin Darlin Baby” off of 1999’s Soft Touch, followed by the intimately expressive “Arrow of Truth” from Best of Acid Jazz Volume 2. Things take off with the rock-pulsed “Razor’s Edge” from 2001 High Life, and open eyes with his atmospheric take on the Door’s epic “Riders on the Storm”.

Two bonus tracks are also a welcome addition, the expansive “Solidarity” featuring keyboardist Max Middleton of Jeff Beck, and the energetic “Yorkville” collaboration with Chuck Loeb. Both cuts come from the 2008 release Brian Tarquin Presents Fretworx, which was created to benefit the Friends of Firefighters 9-11 Foundation.

While vocals, horns, and essential beats are to be found all around, the root of it all can be found in the six-string: the artist’s deep love of the guitar and what it has to say is in evidence at every turn in this most welcome compilation from one of contemporary jazz’s most successful players. “I am a guitar guy,” Brian Tarquin confirms. “I’ve always expressed myself with guitar -- it’s an extension of my body and my hands. It’s what I hear in my head.”
